Legacy Giving

Planned giving to Trellis Foundation is a meaningful way to leave a lasting legacy gift. It’s also a significant way to honour the 66 years of ministry of Covenant Bible College and further its mission of making and maturing disciples. A legacy gift to Covenant Bible College, already planned for through a will or other form of designation, will be fulfilled to Trellis Foundation. Trellis Foundation can receive bequests made out to Covenant Bible College or to Trellis Foundation, simply mail the cheque to the address above.

What better way to thank an organization that has had an impact on your life, or the life of someone you love, than by making a contribution from your estate? By creating a legacy, you are making a significant contribution to the future sustainability of the work that is most meaningful to you.

If you would like to speak with someone regarding legacy giving, please call our office at 204.284.5640.

Helpful Details

A legacy gift can also be a very practical addition to your financial or estate plan — in most cases, the tax burden left to relatives is lifted significantly. Your professional advisor can show you how giving may actually benefit your family after you are gone.

Normally, the limit of an annual tax receipt a donor can claim is 75% of net income. Unused receipts can be carried forward for five years. The rules are different for a taxpayer’s final tax return, filed after death. Bequests to charities can be used to cover 100% of income for the final year of life. If the donor had unused charitable donation room in the previous year, any unused charitable tax receipts can be carried back one year and a refund claimed on taxes already paid.

Ways to partner with Trellis Foundation through Legacy Giving

  • Prepare a Will. Without a Will you lose control over your property at death. Clearly name Trellis Foundation OR Covenant Bible College as a benefactor of a gift in your Will.
  • Leave a specific dollar amount or percentage of your estate in your Will.
  • Consider using specific assets for your gift, such as: Stocks, Bonds, Term Deposits, Real Estate, or Insurance.
  • Name Trellis Foundation as a beneficiary of your RRSP, RRIF or pension.
  • Name Trellis Foundation as a beneficiary of an existing or paid up life insurance policy.
  • Purchase a new life insurance policy with Trellis Foundation as a beneficiary.
  • Remember loved ones with a memorial gift.
  • Encourage family and friends to leave gifts to Trellis Foundation in their Wills.

There are many things to consider before a deciding whether a donation should be made during their lifetime or through a bequest. Gifts both large and small are important — legacy giving is not just for the wealthy.  Take the time to consider your options carefully and plan your gift in consultation with your family, lawyer or financial and/or tax advisor.
